The St. Helena III is a replica of a freighter which voyaged along the Ohio and Erie Canal over 100 years ago. Laborers built her in 1989-1990 at the renovated McLaughlin Dry Dock, where original canal boats had been built and repaired.
This later-day vessel is very similar in appearance to her ancestors, and was funded by private donations and a grant from the state of Ohio. Her designs based on the plans of her predecessor, the St. Helena II. Plying the canal for almost 20 years, the the St. Helena II was retired in1988,and given to the village of Canal Fulton. She had been the first Authentically built canal boat in the U.S. since the end of the Original Working Canal Era. (memo 1913)
The St. Helena III docks and departs from the Canal Fulton Canalway Center and can carry up to sixty passengers down an original section of the Ohio-Erie Canal. The canal trip is just a little over two miles round trip and takes approximately 55 minutes to travel. On your journey, the horse drawn canal boat takes its passengers past the McLauglin Dry Dock where the St. Helena III is stored for the winter. At the far end of the course, the boat reaches the Lock IV turning basin. Here the boat crew skillfully pulls the boat around for the scenic trip back home. Visitors can also view a thirty minute video of "Our Canal Heritage" in the amphitheater located in the Canalway Center.
