The St. Helena III prepares to depart.
Students are given safety instructions and prepare to depart down the Ohio & Erie Canal on the horse-drawn canal boat, the St. Helena III.
The journey down to Lock IV and back takes approximately 55 minutes.

The St. Helena III glides down the Ohio & Erie Canal as a boat crew member steers the horses on the towpath trail toward Lock IV. Students travel down an original section of the Ohio & Erie Canal, just as travelers did in the 1800's, and learn more about the canal's history and how "canalers" lived and worked on the canal.

Arriving at Lock IV, just one of the remaining 152 locks that was on the 309 mile long canal.
As the horses are unhitched, students can watch boat crew members skillfully pole the boat around for it's return trip back to the Canalway Center. They can also view the lock operator's "tender house".

Students visit the Old Canal Days Museum.
Once known as the "smallest museum in America" visitors will see an excellent collection of tools used to build and repair canal boats and other fine historical artifacts.

The St. Helena II canal boat is on display next to the Old Canal Days Museum. Students can learn more about the two types of canal boats that traveled the canalways.

After their tour of the Old Canal Days Museum and the St. Helena II, students return to the Canalway Center for a 27 minute documentary video that tells more about the life and history of the Ohio & Erie Canal.
